Autumn in New England is a time of crisp morning air, apple picking and raking piles of colorful leaves. It’s also the perfect time to address two maintenance activities that can greatly improve the air flow and air quality in your facility.

1. Clean out facility louver vents
The louvers, both stationary and moving, play an important role in protecting buildings and rooms from moisture, dirt and debris, and have a key roll in extending the overall longevity of your facility.

While gutters and downspouts remove water away from a building’s exterior, the louver’s job is to facilitate air flow and prevent the build-up of moisture, stagnant humid air, dirt and debris. When louvers aren’t cleaned on a regular basis, dust buildup, dried leaves, and other debris clog the air flow, trapping condensation and humidity within the building. This can potentially cause costly issues such as rust, mold, and significantly reduced air quality and flow.

2. Clean out facility plenum areas

The plenum air intake area is a separate space designed to facilitate air circulation for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning. These typically dead, non-circulating air spaces are naturally prone to develop large amounts of dust buildup, not only on the louver vents, but on all the floors and equipment in the plenum area. In a relatively short amount of time, the dust buildup and debris can significantly reduce air quality and flow. Ideally, these areas should be cleaned out a minimum of twice a year.
